Find the Margin Before the Job Ends.
Most operations know their overall profit and almost nothing about which jobs produced it. Costs land in the accounting package weeks later, coded to an account rather than a job, and by the time a bad job is visible it has been finished, invoiced and repeated. Job costing puts labour, materials, equipment and subs against the job as they happen.
The Symptoms, Before the Diagnosis.
Margin is a month-end surprise
The number arrives after the work is done, attached to a period rather than a project. The job that lost money is already invoiced and the crew has started another one just like it.
Estimate versus actual is never compared
The estimate lives in the quoting tool, the actual lives in accounting, and nobody has the half-day it takes to line them up. So estimating never learns from delivery.
Change orders are invisible in the cost
Extra work gets done, sometimes gets billed, and almost never gets costed back to the job. The gap between what was agreed, what was performed and what was invoiced is pure margin leak.
Equipment and overhead land nowhere
Machine hours, fuel, small tools and travel are absorbed as general costs, so equipment-heavy jobs look more profitable than they are and get priced accordingly next time.
Job Costing & Margin Tracking, in Scope.
Scope is set against your operation, not against this list — but this is the shape of a build in this line.
Costs posted as they occur
Hours from the field, material from the supplier invoice, equipment from the log, subs from their invoices — each landing against the job that incurred them, near the time it happened.
Estimate versus actual, live
The estimate and the running actual side by side on the same screen, by cost code, so a job going sideways is visible while there is still a decision to make about it.
Change orders in the cost picture
Authorised extra work priced and tracked against the job it belongs to, so the invoice, the cost and the agreement all describe the same job.
Feeds the books rather than fights them
The costing layer reconciles with the accounting package rather than becoming a second, disagreeing set of numbers. The ledger stays where it is; the job-level view is what is new.

The hard part of job costing is not the arithmetic, it is capture. If entering time or materials against a job is slower than not doing it, the data will be late, wrong or absent, and the reports built on it will be confidently misleading. So we start at the point of capture and work backwards from there.
We also fix the cost codes before we build anything. Most operations have a structure inherited from their accounting setup that nobody costs against in practice; agreeing a small, real set of codes that the field can actually use is usually the highest-value hour of the whole engagement.
What It Looks Like When It Works.
You can say which jobs, which crews and which types of work make money, with enough confidence to change what you bid on. Estimating gets a feedback loop, and a job going wrong is a conversation this week rather than a discovery next quarter.

General contractor · live in production
A general contractor across Edmonton and Calgary brought jobs, approvals, documents and management visibility onto one custom platform, so the state of a project — including what has been authorised against it — is answerable without a phone call. Client-reported.

Job Costing & Margin Tracking, Answered.
Does This Replace QuickBooks?
No. Your books stay where they are. Job costing is the layer that answers a question the ledger is not structured to answer — which job made money and why — and it reconciles back to accounting rather than competing with it.
How Do Hours Get Into It?
From wherever your crews already record them, if that source is reliable, or from a capture tool we build if it is not. The rule is that recording time against a job has to be faster than not doing it, or the numbers will not be trustworthy enough to act on.
We Bid Fixed Price. Is Job Costing Still Worth It?
Fixed price is where it pays most. When the price is locked, the only lever left is cost, and the only way estimating improves is by comparing what you assumed against what the job actually consumed.
